Trump's APEC 2026 Trip: Manila, Shenzhen, and What to Watch in November

Trump is expected in Manila for ASEAN meetings and in Shenzhen for APEC on Nov. 18-19, 2026. What is confirmed, what is not, and what is at stake with Xi.

The Trip at a Glance

Once the midterm votes are counted, the president's travel calendar turns to Asia. Two stops are expected in mid-November. The first is Manila, where the Philippines hosts this year's ASEAN summit and related leaders' meetings. The second is Shenzhen, in southern China's Guangdong province, which hosts the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting on November 18 and 19, 2026, with the APEC CEO Summit running November 17 and 18. The New York Post, citing the White House, reported in October that Trump would be in Manila on November 16 before continuing to China, and the Philippine presidential palace has confirmed the visit. As of November 2, though, we had not found a formal itinerary on the White House website, and China's foreign ministry had not announced Trump's attendance. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is only expected, and it will be updated as the schedule firms up. Once the trip begins, our live tracker will show each confirmed stop.

Confirmed vs. Expected: Where Each Piece Stands

Here is the status of each part of the trip as of November 2, 2026. - APEC dates and city: confirmed. Shenzhen hosts the leaders' meeting on November 18-19, per APEC and Chinese state media. - Trump attending APEC: expected. After Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington in September, both governments' readouts said the leaders intend to attend, and Trump posted, "We will be meeting again in November, in China." - Manila stop: confirmed by the Philippines. President Marcos's office said Trump will attend, and palace press officer Claire Castro said, "It is confirmed, but the details will not come from me." - ASEAN summit dates: unsettled in reporting. Metro Manila declared November 16-18 special non-working days, while one Philippine outlet put the summit at November 15-17 at the Philippine International Convention Center. - Quad leaders' summit: planned. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on October 31 that it will be held in Manila during the ASEAN meetings, with no date set. It would be the first Quad leaders' summit of Trump's second term. - Trump-Xi meeting in Shenzhen: expected, not formally scheduled. - Trump-Xi-Putin meeting: unconfirmed. The Kremlin has floated it; Beijing has said it has no information.

Why Shenzhen Matters, and a Possible First

Xi Jinping named Shenzhen as host when China accepted the APEC chair at the end of the Gyeongju summit in South Korea on November 1, 2025. This is China's third turn hosting APEC, after Shanghai in 2001 and Beijing in 2014. Beijing has not given an official reason for choosing the city, but Shenzhen's story makes the symbolism easy to read: a special economic zone created in 1980 that grew into one of the country's main technology and manufacturing centers, just across the border from Hong Kong. The visit may also set a small record. Hong Kong outlet HK01 reported that no sitting U.S. president has visited Guangdong province; previous presidential trips to China went to cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin and Hangzhou. We have not found a second source stating that directly, so treat it as likely rather than settled. Hong Kong media have reported a summit venue in Shenzhen's Futian district, but organizers had not published final venue details as of early November.

How the Trip Fits Trump's 2026 China Calendar

Shenzhen would be the third Trump-Xi meeting of 2026. Trump made a state visit to Beijing from May 13 to 15, a trip first planned for early April and postponed because of the Iran war, according to the AP. Xi returned the visit with a state visit to Washington from September 23 to 25. Counting their October 2025 meeting in Busan, South Korea, Shenzhen would be their fourth in-person meeting of Trump's second term, and a fourth meeting of 2026 is possible if Xi attends the G20 summit Trump hosts in December. It would also be Trump's third presidential trip to China, after 2017 and May 2026. Earlier this year the two sides described their aim as a relationship of "strategic stability," and Trump said China had agreed to buy 200 Boeing jets, an order that reporting says has not yet been finalized. Our overview of Trump's international trips puts these visits in the context of his wider diplomatic travel.

What Is at Stake in Shenzhen

Trade is the center of gravity. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in September that the U.S.-China trade truce had been extended only to January 10, 2027, a shorter extension than many expected, with deliveries of Chinese rare earths still the main sticking point. Reporting in October, citing unnamed sources, said Bessent planned to concentrate on talks with Vice Premier He Lifeng around the Shenzhen summit to seek a longer extension. Export controls run in both directions: Beijing objects to U.S. limits on advanced chips, while Washington wants reliable access to rare-earth materials. A 10 percent tariff tied to fentanyl remains in place, according to a CSIS analysis of the September summit. Taiwan arms sales and the promised Boeing purchase are also on the list of issues to watch. Our running list of 2026 tariffs and our explainer on sanctions and export controls cover the legal tools behind these negotiations.

The Putin Question

The most uncertain piece of the trip is Russia. In September, Kremlin foreign-policy aide Yuri Ushakov said a three-way meeting among Trump, Xi and Vladimir Putin had been discussed for the APEC sidelines. In late October he said China was "already dealing with" preparations and that the meeting could be added "if circumstances are favourable." China's foreign ministry welcomed Putin's attendance at APEC in early October, but a ministry spokesperson said Beijing had no information about a trilateral. Bloomberg reported in September that Putin planned to attend APEC and skip the December G20 in Miami. Until one of the three governments announces it, a Trump-Putin-Xi meeting should be treated as possible, not planned. Trump has also said a meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un is "possible," but no plans for one have been reported.

Getting There: Air Force One and Time Zones

A trip to Manila and Shenzhen is one of the longest flights a president makes. In June, Trump unveiled the Qatar-donated Boeing 747-8 serving as an interim Air Force One, designated "VC-25B Bridge," which is meant to fly until Boeing's new presidential jets arrive later in the decade; whether it will carry him on this trip has not been confirmed. For anyone following along from the United States, the time difference matters: Manila and Shenzhen are both 13 hours ahead of Washington in mid-November, so a morning session in Shenzhen happens overnight on the East Coast. Overseas trips also change how location reports arrive. Foreign host governments, traveling press pools and local media all report movements, which usually makes international stops easier to confirm than a quiet weekend at home. Our guide to tracking presidential travel by aircraft explains what departures and arrivals reveal.

After Shenzhen: The G20 at Trump National Doral

The Asia trip leads into the next big summit on the calendar, and that one is on Trump's own property. The United States hosts the G20 leaders' summit on December 14 and 15, 2026, at Trump National Doral near Miami. The White House has said the resort will host "at cost" with "no profit," while ethics watchdogs, including Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, have raised emoluments concerns, echoing the debate over the 2019 G7 plan for Doral that was dropped. Trump also announced in November 2025 that South Africa would be excluded from the Miami summit, a decision Germany's chancellor has urged him to reverse. The Trump National Doral location page shows the resort's visit history, which will grow as summit preparations begin.
